- Any kind of keerai or spinach . one bunch (approx. 50-100 gms)
- urad dhal - 1or 2 table spoons
- Dry red chilies - 2
- Jeera - one tbsp. for grinding and one for seasoning.
- Grated coconut - 1/2 cup (grated - fist ful)
- (Coconut) Oil - 2 tbsps
- Half cup moong dhal cooked (with no turmeric added).
- Add a pinch of salt and cook spinach until it's soft.
- In a frying pan, add i tbsp of oil, one tbsp of urad dhal, 2 chilies and fry until urad dhal turns red
- now add grated coconut, fried urad dhal+ dry chilies, one tbsp of jeera and grind to a fine paste
- in the same mixer, after emptying the ground coconut etc.. add spinach (with no water) and grind for just one round (do not make it to a fine paste).
- mix spinach and ground coconut , add more salt and bring to a boil.
- Now add the cooked moong dhal and bring to a boil.
- If needed (f it's too thin) dissolve a tblsp of rice flour and add / boil.
- Turn off the fire after the mixture comes to an inital boil.
- Now add oil, mustard, urad dhal and let mustard splutter. (optionally ad a red chilly)
- add the seasoning on mulkoottal.
Mulakottaal is ready to be served. Enjoy it with pickle or any pachady of your choice.
Note: This dish doesn't need, curry leaves, asaefotida, or turmeric powder.
